A gluten-free, vegan diet might improve the health of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, according to Swedish researchers. The diet, they say, can help protect against heart attacks and stroke.

Is this news? Not to T. Colin Campbell, author of the book "The China Study," which details the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

"I get frustrated when I see articles like this--time and time again--being published by researchers who know not that much of their findings have already been shown before," Campbell said, when I asked him if he'd seen the study.

"These earlier results are simply ignored, thus awaiting rediscovery by some future researcher or medical practitioner. This is the main question for so many similar reports...why haven't we heard this before?"

Campbell cited the work of Dr. John McDougall, who teaches "better health through a vegetarian cuisine.

"He has 40 years of medical practice experience, has published at least 10 books, and has specifically relieved the pain of many individuals with rheumatoid arthritis by using a gluten-free, vegan diet," Campbell said.

"Yet, he and many other professionals like him are too often kept in the closet by mainstream medicine," Campbell said.

Read why McDougall thinks diet is the only real hope for arthritis.
Economics unquestionably plays into the fact that Dr. Campbell and Dr. McDougall’s research is repeatedly shoved beneath the carpet. It doesn't cost much to eat well and take care of yourself with a healthy vegetarian diet. Thus, the medical establishment has little incentive to educate their patients about the power of a plant-based diet.
A grain free diet reduces the glycation process, this is where the cartilage attack begins. Not eating meat however will be deleterious. Grain fed meat must be avoided however. Grain free means gluten free as well. A dramatic diminution in the insulin resistance factor occurs concomitantly. No drug will cure an unhealthy lifestyle disease.
If you actually read the linked article, there is no evidence that the patients were actually helped in any meaningful way. Nobody knows if these antibody levels have any connection to disease severity. If this is such a great diet, why weren't the clinical responses shown. I am a rheumatoid arthritis patient, and the amount of junk that gets established as "fact" is astonishing.

The basics of good health are quite simple and these facts have been known for many years. Unfortunately, they are distorted by people looking to make a profit - either by selling books, newspapers, drugs (and supplements too!), or making unrealistic health claims to people suffering with poor health to turn a profit from their suffering.
